From TOGAF 9 Foundation to Certified — A Five-Year Enterprise Architecture Journey

On 30 March 2026, I formally achieved TOGAF 9 Certified status.

For me, this was not the beginning of a new subject, but the continuation of a professional-development journey that began five years earlier. I completed TOGAF 9 Foundation in 2021; five years later, I took the next step from Foundation to TOGAF 9 Certified.

From understanding the framework to mastering it more fully

TOGAF is a widely adopted framework in the enterprise architecture profession. The Foundation level established my understanding of its core concepts, terminology, architecture development method and governance thinking. Certified required a deeper and more complete grasp of the method, including how its individual elements connect.

During those five years, my work and learning extended far beyond examination material. Through practical involvement in architecture, security, data and technology decisions, I came to understand more clearly that architecture is not valuable simply because it produces a complete-looking collection of documents. Its value lies in connecting business direction, stakeholder needs, risk, governance and implementable technology decisions.

Returning to TOGAF five years later

When I completed Foundation in 2021, it gave me a common language for understanding enterprise architecture. Returning to the framework in 2026 with more practical experience allowed me to see the same material at a different level.

Where I might once have focused mainly on phases, deliverables and terminology, I now pay greater attention to the problem behind each architecture activity: why a decision is needed, who must be involved, what constraints apply, how change should be governed, and how architecture can genuinely support organisational objectives.

A milestone and a continuing commitment

Achieving TOGAF 9 Certified recognises five years of continued learning and marks another milestone in my professional development. It does not mean that the learning is complete. Instead, it reinforces my commitment to combine architecture methods, professional judgement and practical experience.

A certificate records an achievement on a particular day. What matters more is how that learning shapes every architecture decision that follows. TOGAF 9 Certified — achieved on 30 March 2026.
