I’m William. I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I now live in the United Kingdom.
Moving away from a familiar city changed the way I notice everyday life. Things that once seemed ordinary—a bowl of Hong Kong-style soup, a meal in a cha chaan teng, a road trip, or a professional milestone—can carry much more meaning when experienced from somewhere else.
Between the Lines is where I keep those experiences.
This is not intended to be a résumé or a carefully polished showcase. It is more like a window that opens gradually. Through one article at a time, readers can get to know what I notice, what I value, and how I make sense of life—in their own time and at their own pace.
Food and Home
Food is never only about taste.
A plate of siu mei, a sizzling Hong Kong-style meal, or a familiar dish found in Britain can bring back a place, a period of life, and memories that go far beyond the food itself.
For me, home means Hong Kong. My food writing therefore records not only whether something tastes good, but also the culture, memories and everyday experiences behind it. At the same time, I enjoy discovering British food and the dishes I encounter while travelling, particularly when they reveal something about a place and the people who live there.
Life and Travel
Moving from Hong Kong to the UK was more than a change of address. It became an ongoing process of learning how to see life from a different perspective.
I write about everyday life in Britain, observations from my travels, and small moments that might otherwise be forgotten. I enjoy planning carefully, but I also value the unexpected discoveries that make a journey memorable.
To me, travel is not simply about counting destinations. What matters is what I understand about a place after I have left it.
Work, Technology and Continuing to Learn
I have worked in information technology for more than two decades, with much of that time focused on information security, cyber security and architecture. I am also a Chartered IT Professional.
Professional qualifications and career milestones are part of this blog, but they are not the whole story. I am more interested in the learning behind them: how ideas develop, how difficult problems can be structured, and how experience can be turned into something practical.
I believe professionalism is not only about knowing the answers. It is also about asking better questions, testing assumptions, and remaining willing to learn even after many years in the field.
Why Two Languages?
Between the Lines is written in Traditional Chinese and English.
Traditional Chinese carries my Hong Kong upbringing, memories and most instinctive expressions. English is an important part of my present working and everyday life in the UK. The two versions may not always be word-for-word translations, because the same experience can reveal a different rhythm or detail when expressed in another language.
